mountain is another word for world
In December 02023 I was an artist in residence in Gros Morne, Western Ktaqmkuk. The mountain range that makes up this territory is my territory, and the same mountain range that my home community is nestled in more Southerly. I resided among these peaks without a work directive, I made freely and was consistently drawn to the mountains. I created approximately 30 paintings and prints while in residence, but these ones became close to my heart, maybe they came from my heart. Each small painting is a documentation, witnessing, engagement, and entanglement with these peaks as they are now, while they change so rapidly.
Each painting is made on Windsor & Newton cotton rag with watercolour from Stoneground, with ochre paint made by Caitlin ffrench from ochre I collected in the brook near my home. I made field sketches of each finished painting and bound them into a book which I called mountain is another word for world. The book was included in a fundraiser for the Rotary Arts Centre in Corner Brook, Ktaqmkuk. The finished book is a collection of sketches; it is covered with hand made paper from Leslie Lundrigan and bound with naturally dyed hemp that I dyed in 02013.
Thank you to Creative Gros Morne for supporting me and to the Old Cottage Hospital for hosting me.
