Come practice in the loom shed, on the farm
An artist has been selected for Autumn 2024.
The Live Textile studio can be found in Katalisk, Ktaqmkuk or Codroy Valley, newfoundland. The ‘Valley’ as it’s lovingly referred to is one of my home territories, it is my home community and is rural.
You're invited to come and reside for a period of weeks to months to research, create or build on your work*. All you have to do is be in touch with me, Megan Samms. Please include in the subject line 'Artist in Residence' and be prepared to later supply an essay, up to (a loose) 5000 words and at a (loose) minimum of 1000, describing why you would like to come reside to practice your craft and what you will contribute to the community when you do so; please include up to 10 images and if applicable, website and/or social media. We acknowledge that written submissions are not the best way of expression for all, so if you would prefer a conversation, video submission, phone call, visit or other type of communication, please be in touch using the form below and we’ll set that up!
*Please know, artists and craftspeople from Mi’kma’ki will be privileged; artists and craftspeople from Ktaqmkuk will be privileged firstly. This is not meant to be exclusionary, but intended to give opportunity to the artists and makers of my homeplace. If an artist from Mi’kma’ki does not apply, we will reach outward. All applications, from anywhere, are welcome and will be kept on hand until an applicant is chosen. A runner up will also be contacted in the event that the first applicant cannot make it.
Contributions to the community might include (but are certainly not limited to) an artists talk, showing of your work, workshop, volunteer time with a community volunteer agency, etc. Financial details are not necessary, but do include some information if you feel it is important to you. Please be prepared to include what sort of resources you will require, if you will need any assistance in learning or refining a technique(s) and a general proposal of the work you intend to do. If you require assistance in securing funding or a grant to be away from your home place, please let me know so I can provide an invitational letter and a letter of support.
Note that this residency is free of charge. There is no fee to reside on the farm and make work at the Live Textiles Loom Shed. There is no work-on-the-farm requirement. Simply come to work on your craft and engage in the community. If you will be applying for your own funding to reside, we will happily provide letters of support and any other resources and references you might need to do so.
If you are interested or need to step away from the studio, there will be an opportunity to work with bees, chickens or in the gardens. There will also be ample opportunity to go for walks, enjoy the ocean and the land.
Our farm and the Live Textiles Workshop is located very rurally. There are dogs, cats, chickens, turkeys, honeybees, pigs, and ducks nearby.
